An Introduction to Hand Engraving as an Art form
Any fine quality hand made knife or firearm stands on its own merits
without its surface adorned by means of engraving or any other form of decorative embellishment
however, from all of the choices made available by means of artistic decoration few elevate the status of a
prestigious collectible and offer such wide latitude in defining ones personality or particular taste as engraving may do.
Wildlife scenes and anatomical representations while rich and dominant in expression are perhaps among the most
difficult too faithfully represent regardless of the chosen medium. As engravers we employ our artistic skills
on the least forgiving of those, a steel canvas.
Learning to appreciate fine art on quality collectibles has become an art in itself. In order to truly appreciate and
understand the elegance, uniqueness and flavor of the vast number of engraved styles one must devote considerable
time researching what defines a quality engraving. Regardless if it is gold inlay, flourishing ornamental patterns,
vine and leaf motifs, bank note, classic English scroll, or heavy baroque relief styles, these have all become the cornerstones
from which firearm and knife engravers traditionally study from.
Without such solid foundations from which to draw upon hand engravers would have a considerably more difficult
climb attaining the higher standards and creative views which are presently appreciated by both collectors and
engraving Artists alike.
